Dear Parishioners,
On Saturday, June 7, several intrepid members of the Ladies Club and I completely re-did the kitchen. While I and two of their number went to Sam’s Club and the restaurant supply store to shop, the others remained behind and finished what began earlier in the week: complete cleaning of all drawers, cabinets and cupboards, and new shelf paper installed. Also, all the old accumulated utensils were given away or disposed of – about ten years of potluck miscellany good for not much.
Then, when the shoppers returned, new pots and pans, heavy skillets, trays and gadgets, and other supplies were put away. A new, large microwave, blender, and roaster came a few days later. The hearty thanks of the parish must be given to the ladies whose hours of work has renewed our kitchen: Jill Rodriguez, Sally LePage,
Now, as summer enters our calendars and things slow down a bit – for which I am extremely grateful – we have an opportunity to look ahead somewhat.
As we plan for the inevitable return of hectic days at the beginning of our Religious Education program in early August, there is much more to do than solicit and train teachers and implement the well-run Religious Education program from pre-school through adult.
Given the phenomenal growth of our parish in the past few years, and, as sure as night follows day, the return of our winter visitors, we are not a small “mission church” any more. As such, we need to pay more detailed attention to things that larger parishes must attend to as a matter of course, and shed our self image of smallness.
Step by step, the Parish Council is planning for its own renewal, and each area of concern in the parish will be addressed as well. The Liturgy Committee needs renewal and expanding; and the outreach of St. Vincent de Paul is challenged ever the more with growing needs and concerns because of our society’s many economic pressures. Even though the Council has acted in a “maintenance committee” mode occasionally, it is necessary to firmly renew such a committee as our council charter calls for.
We have replaced two compressors in the last year, completely re-paved the road, crack-sealed the parking lot, and replaced roofs on virtually all our buildings. Our combined investment in these enterprises was about $114,000, all from your generosity to the Capital Improvements Fund, this in addition to your regular offerings and special collections and – most notably – the recent Diocesan Capital Campaign. Income from offertory and special gifts amounted to about $285,000 and pledges to the Capital Campaign of $568,000 will yield $217,000 in rebates over the next five years. This is not a small “mission church” anymore!
Please be assured of my prayers and gratitude to you all for your continual support of San Martín de Porres! It truly is “our” community!
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Mike Shay, S.D.S.
Pastor
